SINGLE USE PARTS FOR A MEDICAL DEVICE MEASURING THE FLOW AND QUANTITY OF URINE OF OR PATIENTS

The challenge:
Med Dynamics developed a device that measures the quantity and flow of urine in OR patients, giving surgical staffs a real-time indication of the patient’s condition during a surgical procedure.
The device included a single use part through which the urine is collected and measured; data is then presented in the OR on a digital screen.
The major challenge was to build a product that would accurately represent the patient’s condition, using materials that are very difficult to work with including flexible PVC which is similar to rubber, and hard PVC.
An additional challenge was the requirement for a low price point because of the single use nature of the product.
We were also required to work in a clean environment.
Plastomold’s solution:
We started by developing multiple cavity molds, one for each part, making sure parts match and do not bias the patient’s urine flow rate. Next we used a special steel, known for its ability to “tame” flexible PVC, to create part of the molds. Finally we created a protocol testing critical product parts, guaranteeing that they measure patient’s body fluids accurately.
During production, our client made changes and improvements in the product – Plastomold consulted on these changes, making sure everything is done right and that the process is quick and efficient.
